[International Cooperation][High Energy Physics] 2010 International Conference on Computing in High Energy and Nuclear Physics to be held at Academia Sinica (Chinese Version)

Academia Sininca Newsletter (2010/10/14) Academia Sinica Grid and Scientific Computing Centre will host the 2010 International Conference on Computing in High Energy and Nuclear Physics (CHEP) from October 18 to 22. About 500 physicists and computing professionals from the fields of high energy and nuclear physics, computer science, and information technology from 27 countries will join the conference to present their latest discoveries.

The five-day conference will feature talks on seven major topics including online computing, event processing, distributed processing and analysis, software engineering/date stores/databases, computing fabrics and networking technologies, grid and cloud middleware as well as collaborative tools. This year’s plenary talks will start with the Worldwide Large Hadron Collider Computing Grid (WLCG) report and be followed by a report on the first year data-taking. CHEP 2010 is the first international conference focusing on Computing in High Energy Physics and Nuclear Physics since the Large Hadron Collider (LHC)’s record-breaking collision on March 30, 2010, and discussions will thus focus on results from the four experiments of the LHC.

The LHC is a gigantic particle accelerator located on the France-Switzerland border which is used by physicists to study the smallest particles – the fundamental building blocks of all things in the Universe. Earlier this year, the LHC set a record for high-energy collisions by crashing two proton beams at 7 teraelectron volts (TeV). In addition to reports on the WLCG and the LHC, latest developments in other high profile high-energy physics experiments including Belle experiment of High Energy Physics, the Collider Detector at Fermilab, and the nuclear physics accelerator FAIR will also be presented at the conference.

The CHEP has been held by scientists from around the world since 1985 as a forum to exchange research findings. The conference is held at roughly 18-month intervals in various locations worldwide. The previous CHEP in 2009 was held in the Czech Republic.

Academia Sinica Grid & Scientific Computing Centre (ASGC), currently the only Tier-1 Center located in Asia, is among the eleven core sites, called Tier-1 Centers, of the WLCG. Via the WLCG, the large amounts of data generated by the LHC are distributed and stored worldwide. The WLCG also provides physicists and scientists with easy access to data and computing resources for their analyses.
